Train mows down 37 Bihar pilgrims

At least 37 people were killed and 24 injured after being hit by a Rajya Rani Express train while crossing the tracks at Dhamara Ghat train station in the Indian state of Bihar.

The passengers were mostly Hindu pilgrims returning from prayers at the nearby Katyayani mandir. The accident triggered a protest by passengers who beat the driver unconscious, attacked staff and torched two coaches of the train. The chief minister of Bihar State, Nitish Kumar, called it "the rarest of rare tragedies. The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee expressed grief and sorrow over the tragic train accident in Bihar and  called upon the authorities concerned to engage in speedy relief and rescue efforts and asked the people of the area to cooperate with them.
